Prince Edward Learning Centre is once again running its free tax clinics. The service is open to anyone in the community who has a modest annual income and a simple tax return.

The office is scheduling appointments now. While PELC’s tax-filing services are offered year-round, the tax clinics have their busiest months in March and April. Last year, the clinics served 689 clients, with an average filing benefit of $4,882 per person through benefits and credits. That translated to $3.3 million back in the pockets of Prince Edward County residents.

The tax clinics are part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, a national initiative of the Canada Revenue Agency. The process is confidential, and all volunteers complete a police background check.

Many benefits and credits are tied to filing a tax return. People who get behind on filing may be missing out on significant benefits, such as:

  • GST rebates
  • Ontario Trillium Credit
  • Canada Carbon Rebate
  • Canada Child Benefit

Tax filers can help clients locate missing documentation such as tax slips, and file multi-year returns going back up to 10 years, helping people access past benefits they’ve been missing. Tax clients also automatically qualify for free benefits screening, which can help identify programs for which they may be eligible, such as assistance with energy costs.

PELC also offers a supported self-filing service for people who don’t meet the eligibility criteria, or want to file their own returns, but would feel more confident with a second set of eyes.

People can discuss their eligibility and book an appointment by phoning PELC at (613) 476-1811 or emailing info@pelc.ca.
